This past weekend, Enthusiast Gaming held its annual EGLX convention in Toronto, Canada. An event dedicating to all of Enthusiast's various achievements, Destructoid managed to grab an interview with ex-Ubisoft developer Patrice Désilets. Known for creating both Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and the Assassin's Creed series, he gave a retrospective talk on Saturday that went over how he entered game development and what he's been up to in the years since leaving Ubisoft.

Since he is known as "The Assassin's Creed guy," the question came up if the man sees himself stuck in a creative rut over that. In response, Désilets stated, "I dunno man! Honestly, I don't know. A little bit! If you're going to spend years on something I hope that happens." While possibly constraining, it's hard not to be proud of a series that has worked its way into even Nintendo's titles.

Explaining further, Désilets said, "Breath of the Wild, wow! That was a game where you could do anything, once you finished the first half-hour or so. Now, you're going to just climb towers and unfog the rest of the map.'s my fault..." While meant as a joke, it does appear as if Désilets wishes developers took different inspiration from his hit series.

That doesn't mean Désilets is ungrateful. He is fully aware that he was able to get his new company (Panache Digital Games) off the ground "because he's the Assassin's Creed guy." Without the opportunity to work at Ubisoft, Désilets wouldn't be striking off on his own. That other creators enjoyed one particular aspect just speaks to how creative the original Assassin's Creed really was.

Désilets was quick to remind the audience at EGLX that he hasn't experienced an Assassin's Creed game in nearly a decade. Having left during the production of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it seems as if walking away from what put him on the map was a tough choice. As he told the audience, "I just can't do it," with regards to playing another title. He has made peace with the whole endeavor, at least.
