DICE’s head of design, Fawzi Mesmar, has left the studio shortly after the launch of his last project, Battlefield 2042. He has been at the helm since 2019 and has had a prolific career at EA's premier studio.

During his time at DICE, Mesmar worked on several projects that include Star Wars Battlefront 2, Battlefield 5, and more recently, Battlefield 2042.

As VGC reports, Mesmar had been planning to quit for a while as DICE has been on the lookout for a successor. He announced his departure to his team in an email where he said, “It was an absolute pleasure to serve on the best design teams in the galaxy,” he wrote in his email to staff. “The incredible design work that you do continues to inspire me every day. Thank you for putting some faith in me, I hope I didn’t disappoint.”

His email also mentioned that he will be joining another studio as he was presented with a very lucrative offer. His next position will be based out of Sweden, but the details on that have yet to be disclosed. Mesmar has had a stellar career so far and his work extends beyond his projects at DICE. His personal website reveals that over the span of 18 years, his work has taken him to places across the globe where he has contributed to the Persona and Candy Crush series' as a game designer.

To top it off, he is also the author of the first-ever Arabic game design textbook and has also co-authored nine comic books. If that wasn't enough, he is also a mentor and regularly holds lectures on game design at different schools. He also won the Game Dev Heroes Award in the design category in 2020. Clearly, his departure from DICE will leave some big shoes to fill.

However, it is worth noting that his departure comes at a time when Battlefield 2042 is in troubled waters. From non-existent hit registration to a missing scoreboard, players have had a lot to complain about. Battlefield 2042 has also received an influx of negative Steam reviews, becoming one of the worst-rated games on the platform this year.

Despite the fact that a lead designer has been actively responding to fan concerns on Twitter, it seems the community’s morale is still low. To try and improve it, DICE recently detailed the fixes it's deploying with its latest patch, but there's still a lot of work to be done.

A high-level position being vacated in such a situation could be cause for concern, but since Mesmar mentioned that the studio was already looking for his successor, it seems that DICE have it all under control.
