The esteemed Rick-Rolling meme has found its way into VR-exclusive game Half-Life: Alyx, thanks to one Redditor. It seems nothing is sacred.
Half-Life: Alyx was released a few days ago, after a maddeningly long period of waiting around for Valve Software to finally give us more Half-Life action. The anticipation for a third instalment in the series became a meme in and of itself, with fans semi-endearingly, semi-abrasively saying Valve can't ever seem to count up to three. That's still technically true, as Alyx ain't no Half-Life 3. Speaking of memes.
A recent post on Reddit tantalizingly entitled "I found something in Half-Life Alyx..." gets you all riled up for some really cool reveal. Of course, that's exactly what you get, because what's cooler than Rick Astley's slick '80s moves?
No, the Rick-Rolling Easter Egg unfortunately wasn't baked into the Half-Life: Alyx world by the Valve devs themselves. According to the comment section on the post, Rick's miraculous appearance on these in-game television screens is courtesy of some behind-the-scenes tweaking on the part of one dedicated fan with a golden sense of humor.
According to one Redditor, "all the webcam footage in Half-Life: Alyx is stored as webm files in the game. So if you find the folder they’re in, you can replace them with whatever webm file you want." Just imagine the endless possibilities with that one.
With the world being in such trash times as they are currently, and most of us being stuck in some kind of quarantine, we're just grateful for anything that provides a bit of comic relief. What better place to find that than in the dank corners of Reddit!
Half-Life: Alyx is a VR-exclusive game currently taking the world by storm. It's now available for purchase on Steam and is compatible with the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality.
There's a lot of great stories about Spider-Man the MCU could pull from, but you can't tell them until he's older.
