Players of Pokémon Sword and Shield have organized Surprise Trade Christmas to help out players getting the games on December 25. Here's how to be a part of it.

Pokémon Sword and Shield have been on the market for over a month now. That means people who have been playing it since release day will already be pretty established. However, some Pokémon fans, especially children, might not get the game until Christmas Day. That leaves them at a distinct disadvantage, especially if they are young fans who have never played a Pokémon game before.

That's why Sword and Shield players have banded together and created something which has been dubbed Surprise Trade Christmas. This is a way to potentially give new trainers to the games a boost by offering up rare, powerful, or just downright cool Pokémon to them. Here's how to be a part of Surprise Trade Christmas and how to use the games' Suprise Trade feature.

First, open up the Y-comm menu by pressing Y. There you can switch between local and online. Choose start trading to be paired with another random player. Pick the Pokémon you want to trade, and try to make it a good one. The game will then start searching for someone to trade with. Once the trade is complete, you will receive a notification in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

Try to trade a starter, fossil, or downright hard-to-find Pokémon if you have one to spare — the sorts of Pokémon new players to the franchise might find hard to come by. Version-exclusives are also a good choice. However, remember that if a Pokémon is too powerful, it might not listen to the trainer you trade it to.

As for when trainers should be trading away their Pokémon as a festive gesture, well, there is no exact start and end date for the event. It will obviously begin on December 25 when those who received the games for Christmas fire up their Switches for the first time. As for when it ends, well it doesn't really have to. Surprise Trade is an option available to players all year round. Use it this Christmas for new players, but it can also be used whenever you're feeling generous.
