Giant purple whales can now be seen floating over the Galar region, as the latest Max Raid Battle Event in Pokémon Sword & Shield is adding Shiny Wailord to Pokémon Dens for a short period of time.

Pokémon Sword & Shield have been running regular events since launch that involve rare Pokémon appearing in Dynamax/Gigantamax form throughout the Wild Area. This means that players can team up and take on massive Pokémon together, with the chance of catching one at the end. This used to be the only way to acquire certain Gigantamax Pokémon, before the release of the Isle of Armor DLC and its special soup.

A new event is currently live in Pokémon Sword & Shield that is bringing Water-type Pokémon into Pokémon Dens around the Wild Area. According to the official Serebii Twitter page, this also includes a chance at catching a Shiny Wailord. This event will run until July 19. In order to take part in this event, the player will need to connect to the Internet. It's also possible to run into Pokémon like Krabby and Mantyke during this event.

Wailord will be familiar to anyone who has played the Isle of Armor DLC, as a giant one can be seen lingering in the sea by the island. The most daring of players immediately launched themselves at the Wailord and tried to catch it. Like the Snorlax in Pokémon Red & Blue, the Wailord vanishes if the player accidentally KOs it before capture.

Shiny Pokémon used to be incredibly rare, outside of the Red Gyarados from Pokémon Gold & Silver, but they've become more common over the years thanks to a number of them being available as part of special events. The player still has a chance of missing the event or failing to capture the Wailord within the time limit, but there will be a lot of giant floating purple whales in the Pokémon world soon.
