Despite being the new game of the week, GamesIndustry has reported that Biomutant has failed to claim the top spot on the UK boxed charts, being beaten out instead by Spider-Man: Miles Morales. This is the second time the Spider-Man game has topped the charts this year.

Miles Morales was able to claim the number one spot due to a strategic price reduction – going for just £30 on PS4. With such a low price, the game’s sales increased by 175 percent for the PS5 version and 104 percent for the PS4 version. Although Miles Morales has continued to perform spectacularly well in the charts since its release in November 2020, it first topped the charts in March, most likely due to an increase in PS5 ownership. It's no surprise, then, that it's managed to reach the top yet again with a sizeable price reduction.

In contrast to Miles Morales, Biomutant has not been met with the same enthusiasm. While sales numbers and reviews reflect players’ high satisfaction with the Spider-Man game, initial reviews for Biomutant, and now its failure to hit number one on the UK boxed charts, demonstrate that the gaming community is feeling relatively indifferent toward the open-world RPG. With such an average debut, it would be difficult to beat out a game that has consistently remained near the top of the charts for the last six months.

Miles Morales and Biomutant weren’t the only games making moves this week. The Last Of Us: Part 2 re-entered the charts at number three after a hiatus thanks to price discounts. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla also rose 196 percent in sales to hit the number five spot. FIFA 21 and Mario Kart 8: Deluxe made some smaller upward movements as well. On the other hand, Miitopia, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons all dropped to lower positions, and games like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition and New Pokémon Snap fell out of the top ten entirely.

While boxed sales don’t speak for the overall success of a game, they do provide a bit of insight into the game's overall performance. Biomutant’s failure to hit number one after its first week coupled with its average reviews does fit into the same general picture. However, the game’s developer seems to be committed to providing players with what they want, and a new patch addressing some of the game’s criticisms could pave the way for a brighter future for Biomutant.
